The Cook Islands
The Cook Islands is a self-governing island nation in the South Pacific, a free association with New Zealand, made up of 15 islands spread across roughly two million square kilometres of ocean. Polynesian voyagers arrived between 800 and 1200 AD, navigating vast distances by star, wave and wind, and established a rich culture of language, genealogy and oral tradition.
The islands take their modern name from Captain James Cook, who charted several of them in the 1770s. In 1888 the islands became a British protectorate and were later annexed by New Zealand. The Cook Islands gained self-governance in 1965, and today the people are proud Kūki 'Āirani — guardians of a living Polynesian heritage carried in song, dance, language and faith.
The History of Ura
Ura is the traditional dance of the Cook Islands — an expressive art form that tells stories of love, nature, faith and daily life through movement of the hands, hips and eyes. Passed from generation to generation, Ura is far more than performance; it is a living record of identity, carried in the body and shared in community.
Two pillars of Ura sit at the heart of URA FITNESS: Ura Pau, the fast-paced, rhythmic drum dance that builds stamina and precision, and Kapa Rima, the graceful hand and arm dance that flows to hymns and slower beats. Together with stretching and abdominal work, they form a full-body practice rooted in the drums and hymns of the Cook Islands.
URA FITNESS brings this tradition into a modern workout — honouring the culture while making it accessible to dancers of every level, anywhere in the world.
